Q-Innovate Insights | Thoughts #5.
Data have always been seen as the foundation for informed decision-making. Yet today, in times of global geopolitical tension, data is no longer just a mirror of reality but increasingly an instrument of interpretation. We can see how statistics and analytics are presented in distorted ways, and with them, our understanding of the world is shaped by selective perspectives rather than facts.
- Selective data use where entire regions or countries are excluded from aggregated statistics,
- Misplaced comparisons where indicators are presented out of context, creating artificial logic,
- Contradictory graphs within the same report, data points may contradict each other.
These practices have become particularly noticeable during periods of heightened geopolitical activity, when data itself becomes a tool in the "information war."
Data is not used as a tool for understanding but as a carrier of a narrative:
- for political purposes to justify or discredit decisions,
- for marketing goals to amplify the attractiveness of a product or service,
- for media attention to generate resonance and clicks through sensational charts.
The most concerning aspect is how normalized this has become.
It is important to mention that once data is distorted at the source, the ripple effects are significant:
- Search engines index articles with narrative-driven statistics,
- LLM models (like ChatGPT and others) train on these datasets,
- Researchers and analysts rely on published materials already skewed by bias.
As a result, each new cycle of using such data takes us further away from an objective picture of reality.
And this is dangerous as this distorts not only analysis but also the history of data itself. Decisions made based on biased data impact real economies, policies, and societies. And it erodes trust in statistics as a tool of science and governance.
Data and analytics must remain neutral. Just as in sports where "fair play" matters, statistics should be free from external narratives.
We live in a time when data has become both a weapon and a commodity. But if we treat statistics only as a tool of manipulation, we deprive ourselves of the ability to see reality.
The true value of data lies in its purity and neutrality. Preserving that integrity is a responsibility shared by researchers, analysts, and publishers alike.
Just like sports, data, statistics, and analytics should never be burdened with any narratives especially political.
